UIdea is an event planning competition sponsored by the Department of Interdepartmental Studies at the University of Iowa. The competition is between the students of two courses: 169:150 Recreation Administration and 188:111 New Ventures in the Arts. The students have the task of creating an event for the University of Iowa’s Welcome Week, a celebration held at the beginning of each academic year to welcome new students and to give returning students to meet with old friends. Welcome Week events are held throughout the campus, but for the purposes of this competition, teams created events that could be held inside or on the grounds of the Iowa Memorial Union. Teams could choose the day and time of the event. The only requirements are that all events
- Serve the mission and spirit of Welcome Week
- Attract a crowd of at least 100 students
- Be financially viable. Due to some information about potential donors and funding, we have not listed the budgets on this website, but students presented their financial research in class.
The competition is currently in Round 2, in which teams within the two courses compete against each other. Round 2 will end at Noon (Central) on April 9th. For more information the competition, the assignments, and the courses, please click on the links at the top of this page.
Voting will be conducted on a pop-up window, so please allow your browser to accept browsers and cookies. Each person may vote once per day. In this first round, you may vote for one arts management and one recreation management project per day. We reserve the right to nullify any votes that appear to be fraudulent. Since this competition is a class project at the University of Iowa, any teams caught cheating will face the disciplinary measures outlined in the UI student handbook.
